Image Tagging Image:Riga - Alberta iela 4.JPG
[edit]
Thanks for uploading Image:Riga - Alberta iela 4.JPG. I notice the image page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you have not created this media yourself then you need to argue that we have the right to use the media on Wikimedia Commons (see copyright tagging below). If you have not created the media yourself then you should also specify where you found it, i.e., in most cases link to the website where you got it, and the terms of use for content from that page.
If the media also doesn't have a copyright tag, then you must also add one. If you created/took the picture, audio, or video then you can use {{GFDL-self}} to release it under the GFDL or {{PD-self}} to release it into the public domain. See Commons:Copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.
Note that any unsourced and untagged images will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have uploaded other media, please check that you have specified their source and copyright tagged them, too. You can find all your uploads using the Gallery tool. Thank you. Small maps?
[edit]Thanks! I agree that Image:NortheastAppalachiansMap.jpg is too small given the text size, etc. My theory at the time was that since images on wikipedia rarely exceed 400 pixels wide, and are often much less, I should make my images no larger than 400 pixels yet still, supposedly, readable. Since then I've learned better, a little. But you are right, that one is a little painful to read. I'll try to dig up the original file and upload a larger version. On the other hand, I think the map could be generally improved in various ways. Of course I have no time for any of this! But I'll try to remember. :-) Pfly 08:42, 1 April 2007 (UTC)
Hello! I think the photos taken April 26th and 27th should be in another category so the articles of the riot could direct to the exact category. Thanks. Avjoska 17:11, 27 April 2007 (UTC)

Image Tagging Image:Leo_Mechelin_-_Albert_Edelfelt_1901.jpg

If the media also doesn't have a copyright tag, then you must also add one. - Hi, the web link you provided as source claims "Foto: Hanna Rikkonen, © Kuvasto 2001 Helsingfors stads konstmuseum". Please show that the photographer allows anybody to use the photos for any purpose. In Finland, all photos taken after January 1, 1966 are protected by law. Thuresson 12:31, 20 December 2007 (UTC)
- There are other photos on the page, some of them of 3-dimensional objects. I suppose the copyright claim applies to them. Claiming copyright to this image however is most likely copyfraud.
- The only way you can argue that the image is unfree is by arguing that:
- Finnish copyright law should apply on Commons.
- Bridgeman Art Library v. Corel Corp. is not applicable in Finland.

Hi Petri,
are you absolutely sure that both identifiable people shown in File:Waffen-SS Sinimäed 2009 - 175.JPG are "Estonian Waffen-SS veterans or neo-Nazis"? --Túrelio (talk) 14:58, 8 August 2009 (UTC)
- Thanks for creating Category:Sinimäed Waffen-SS monument. I was going to create something similar my self, but I was not sure of the dedication of the memorial and have not been able to access reliable information. Anyway, its is my personal opinion, that the memorial is dedicated to the Waffen-SS — official Estonia may have a different view. There is also a Soviet memorial.
- The problem here is that the related category hierarchy was totally missing. I plan to upload more pictures, clear up the descriptions for all the pictures and create some more categories.
- As to the people of in the photo: they are inside the "police line" i.e. the plastic ribbon in the the background, so they are evidently taking part in the celebrations as invited guests. (I was not allowed inside the line.) They are not bystanders. The celebration is not about the 65th anniversary of the battle, but specificly about the the 65th anniversary of the Waffen-SS victory in the battle. -- Petri Krohn (talk) 16:37, 8 August 2009 (UTC)
- Thanks for the clarification. --Túrelio (talk) 17:28, 8 August 2009 (UTC)
- OK Petri Krohn, either you choose to rename the recent images you have uploaded that portray living people and are labeled SS by your choosing or I would need to list the images for deletion pr defamation. Thanks for understanding!--Termer (talk) 03:30, 17 August 2009 (UTC)

Tip: Categorizing images
[edit]
Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.
Here's how:
1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:
2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.
[[Category:Category name]]
For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:
[[Category:Astronomical diagrams]]
[[Category:Comets]]
This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".
When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").
Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.CategorizationBot (talk) 11:39, 15 March 2011 (UTC)
- Image:Syktyvkar railway station 2603.JPG was uncategorized on 14 March 2011 CategorizationBot (talk) 11:39, 15 March 2011 (UTC)
You created this category (and populated it, I assume). The category is described as "Photographs that are or have been used as proof of a genocide (Holodomor) in Ukraine in 1932–1934, but are known to depict something else".
I think it's pretty clear that these are not either drawings or staged photos, so my question is: what is the "something else" that these photographs depict, and what is your reference for that? Herostratus (talk) 17:03, 8 September 2011 (UTC)
- In most cases they depict the Russian famine of 1921. The source for not being "Holodomor" is inclusion of the photo in some pre-1930 photo archive. A list of these sources is presented on the talk page: Category talk:Holodomor hoax photos#Sources for 1921–1922 famine photos. Typically these photos are attributed to Fridtjof Nansen and available in his archive in the Norwegian Nasjonalbiblioteket. -- Petri Krohn (talk) 21:10, 8 September 2011 (UTC)

Rif Dimashq map
[edit]Most of the changes are fixes to general problems with the map; e.g. until quite recently Moadamyeh was listed as Government controlled, whereas it looks like it's long been the scene of clashes, with neither side effectively controlling it, since the beginning of the offensive. I was planning on making a map showing the frontlines at the time of the Ghouta attacks, and so have been looking over the map, and to be honest I think the current map (last updated 27 August) best reflects the frontlines at the time of the attack. The frontline has been relatively fixed for a while, with the last sizable exchange of territory being that of al-Ghazlaniya, near the airport, taking place on the 10 August. MrPenguin20 (talk) 15:11, 29 August 2013 (UTC)
- Naturaly though if you use the map and people notice problems/believe the frontline was different at the time of the offensive I'd be happy to create/edit a new version of the map for you correcting any such problems. MrPenguin20 (talk) 15:13, 29 August 2013 (UTC)
